HISTORY WITH MYSTERY

THE STORY OF TTS

The story Toba Tek Singh revolves around the partition of India and Pakistan. It depicts how the people felt about the partition and how it affected them.

I conveyed my conversation with Toba Tek Singh through a poster. A poster is a very effective medium to convey this. A poster is just so attractive in itself that people do consider it anyways. It has become a great medium today to convey messages to people. Even during old times, poster was a great medium to convey many things. Handmade posters were made then.

This story has confusion at its centre as it is not clear who Toba Tek Singh is. Is Toba Tek Singh a person or land? It is not clear. All the lunatics are confused about what is happening around them. They all do not know which parts come under India and which under Pakistan. They do not have full information about what is happening outside the asylum. Our confusion starts and continues with the talk of Toba Tek Singh as we are not clearly told who Toba Tek Singh is. This develops too much confuison.

I have chosen this poster as all the writings are written on a letter which is old enough. So this poster is completely apt for my conversation with Toba Tek Singh, who is in the past. He expresses his sorrow as India and Pakistan have parted. The partition caused no effect to the political leaders, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mohammed Ali Jinnah and many others. But it affected all the common people of both the countries. It affected their families and their sentiments. Toba Tek Singh tells how he was searching for his home land but could not find it. He even asked me about it. But unfortunately even I did not know. He also told how this hatred has increased between the politicians and this has greatly affected all the common people. All the inmates including Toba Tek Singh are lunatics and are insane people while all other people are referred as sane people. But the sorrow and feelings of Toba Tek Singh made him the most sane person and all the politicians who divided India and Pakistan the insane ones.

Our whole conversation speaks of the partition time and all the history of common people who were not involved in partition but we’re most affected by it. When Toba Tek Singh is on the land between India and Pakistan, which does not form a part of either of the countries, that is when I understand that that land is his home land, Toba Tek Singh. This land is referred as no man’s land as this is the land which does not belong to anyone. It is the land which signifies peace and that land is not differentiated on the basis of religion, caste, gender, etc.

If there would not have been any partition, Toba Tek Singh wouldn’t have to search and ask everyone for his home land. There would have been unity among all and today there wouldn’t have been wars between the two countries. The situation today would be too different then. There would have been brotherhood between the countries and most importantly there would have been much peace today. Toba Tek Singh would had happily stayed in his home land then, but everything changed only because of this partition.

Now, I only hope to see a better tomorrow with no hatred and enimity. The thing which both the countries need today is peace and brotherhood. If we achieve that, we can be the most luckiest and most peaceful country.
