Dear Toba tek Singh,

The story which describes the exchange of mental asylum inmates between India and Pakistan in the wake of partition, was perhaps Saadat Hasan Manto’s most well-known short story. The main theme of this story is  confusion, identity, separation, change, control and ignorance. Manto uses few themes like

Tragedy – The tragedy and its note are loud and clear all through the text of the story. We recapitulate the event through the perspectives of different people, be it the authority or the prisoner.

Separation – Partition brought separation of families and nationalities. People became stranger in their won houses and land overnight. This was particularly true for he could not even find his town of Toba Tek Singh because no one knew in which country it would end up.

Identity – There were millions like Bishen Singh who either lost their land, their families, their religion or their life, just in the name of political independence and declaration.

Sanity – He plays cleverly with the idea of sanity in this story. The world outside the asylum is represented as chaotic and insane whereas the world inside it is made out to be calm and rational.

During the freedom struggle between the two countries there was huge blood shed, many people lost their life’s, many people became homeless. After many struggle there was freedom for both the country and only few people like mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru etc. were know to the world. But there were many unsung hero’s for this struggle who was not even know by many of them. One of the unsung hero was our Toba tek Singh, he tells us the ill effects of the partition through the eyes of a mental asylum.

Now let’s image that Toba tek Singh is still present in the world, he is between our own common people. If he would be the normal person, then the entire scenario would be entirely different. So I would like to image our Toba tek Singh as a political leader. The main reason why I felt that is because the main intention of the exchange of lunatic people was of no use ,and they also didn’t know the reason why they were been shifted from one place to another, in the same ideology, in the present these kinds of people are the political leaders, who just want to rule the people, but they never want to do anything for their betterment.

This is the only main reason why I would like to talk about Toba tek Singh as a religious leaders.

If this would be the case then there would be so many chaos and many speeches. I am able to tell this because a normal person always has the right to question about what they feel is wrong where as if he a Lunatic they would never been allowed to question rather everything would be ignored just telling that they are abnormal. If he was a normal person he would tried to find of the different ways for the reason of the Partition. So during this search he found that the main reason for the partition or the fight was not due to the political reasons. The people in the world themselves didn’t know the reason for the why is war taking place between the people. So there are many situations like that even in the present which we are facing like the political fight between the people who fight just between themselves to just rule the people. This clearly tell us that they just want to rule over people which is totally wrong. There are many ill effects of these leaders ruling us like whatever they do should be considered as right or else they are all chances to even kill us. For them only their happiness is required. Ruling over them the people have seriously lost their minds and becoming Lunatics, because they never give them the chance to question in case they question they are fired. Sometimes in our life there are many things which happens without any reason, and there is no use of question it as we know that we are never going to get answers for questions. Finally the Toba tek Singh also die between the borders of the two states. We can even compare the story with the present situations which is happening around us, one of the best example according to me is the covid situation which made us to be aware of many things around us like hygiene, self care, important of savings of money. In the same way Manto use of the patients to reflect the “madness” of what was happening outside was poignant. The asylum in a sense represents the whole subcontinent the madness of its symbolic commentary on the trauma of displacement. His intense suffering reflects that of partition refugees.

The mode of creativity that I have chosen is video making though the video I have clearly explained about Toba tek Singh and give comparison to real life scenarios also. I feel that my creative mode of expression is better compared to other modes because we can easily attract people when a visual data is been explained, this is the main reason why I feel my mode of creativity is better than others. The context that I have used is about the behaviour of political leaders and compared them though the story. The people who have been affected is the common people like us. There is hope in future that there may be no partition between any states or even between people and there will be harmony between all the people. For a better future we have to have a good relationship with everyone.

Thankyou..
