The best way to Portray the essential information to the
present population is through creative ways which drag their attention. We
teenagers are very lazy to try creative things in our life. We lead our life in
such a way that others follow. We won't create our path and follow it. So, I
came up the idea of presenting a historical movement through a short film. I
got an opportunity to show people about my plot through a creative framework.
The cause for such an idea was to explain viewers in detail about the movement
that took place during the partition. I directed the short film in such a way
that it takes all the viewers to portray the situation that their ancestors had
faced during the historical times.
Watching a creative movie can actually spark drive into our
life. Watching normal people changing into heroes during the story can inspire
or encourage us to do the same in our daily life. We realise that common people
like us, are also capable of doing great things in our life while watching
these types of historical movies. This short film includes some depiction of
sociality, racism, politics, economics, psychology, ethnicity, etc.., that
helps us to learn so many different things. We can also experience an increased
awareness that we perhaps never thought about it. Youth can learn social skills
that include problem solving, sharing and sensitive from analysing the plot of
the story.
Short documentary film is a blend of entertainment and a
source of knowledge, which is a powerful mix and can expand one’s life by
expanding one’s awareness. This mode of creativeness is likely important for
historical re-imagination because it gives a social stand for me where I can
showcase my views for societal related matters / situations. Short film offers
the possibility of social awareness about the issues that took place centuries
ago. Within a short period of time, I can get the viewers access through
various topics and issues which was unaware by most of us. I didn't take this
opportunity just to score marks but wanted the viewers to understand the impact
of partition on people. I aspire to bring collective awareness, which increases
the potential for change, sometimes in the form of legislation or in the form
of personal behaviour.
The historical context which I have created describes about
the leadership. It specifies that leadership is not about power, title or a
designation, but it’s about the impact, influence and inspiration. This context
also determines that there are good people among the evil ones. So, I came up
the idea of personifying Toba Tek Singh as both person and place.
The historical story begins with British guy named 'Tek' entering a Kusha village where most of the people were Sikhs. Most of these villagers had suffered a lot under British rule. So, when they saw Tek, they humiliated him without knowing the reason for his arrival. Finally, tek tells the reason behind his arrival in the village. After listening to his story, all the villagers admit him. Tek inspired the villagers to start a movement against harassment they were facing under British rule. This movement impressed the British leaders and they craved to know the master mind behind this successful movement. After going through the case deeply, the leaders get to know that Tek is the master mind and they pass a verdict to hand tek in front of his fellow men. Knowing the verdict, tek conveys his last message to the villagers through a poem. The dedication of tek made the villagers to rename their village as “Toba Tek Singh”. Toba means to ask forgiveness for his death and Singh to indicate that Tek is one of their family.
The partition dismantled a large number of people (14
million people) resulting in the death of over two million people creating one
of the biggest refugee crises in history and a hostile relationship between the
divided nations. Riots and fighting were rife, particularly in the western
region of Punjab. Although British was ruling our land over 200 years, people
were united as one. They all suffered as one and there was no such division
between them. We can tell our land has got independence but not the people. The
best example is Bishan Singh. He died in the no man's land region between India
and Pakistan. This is not just a plot of Bishan Singh but it's about many
people just like him who had suffered due to the Partition. We need to analyse properly about the
independence given by Britishers. If we think deeply about the independence
given by them, we will know the real face of them. Although they gave us
independence, they created everlasting
disputes among the neighbouring states.
